"Taipei 21 Jan 2002- First International Computer, Inc. (FIC) is pleased to announce the release of yet another new communications product. The new Cardea Wireless Access Point and Gateway Router is the latest, versatile network solution for use in the home or office.

Gene Sheu, President of the FIC Networking Information Group commented, “Wireless communications technology is really beginning to take off now and FIC aims to be at the forefront of the industry with groundbreaking technology. The new Cardea product is the first step along that road. More exciting products will follow this year with even more functionality.”

The new Cardea is a Wireless Access Point (AP) and Gateway Router for use in the home or office. Fanless and silent, the unit measures just 141 x 100 x 27 mm and is powered from a separate low voltage, DC power supply. The unit is fully 802.11b, 802.3, 802.3u and 802.3x compliant and the wireless range can extend to 300m. Transmission speed varies between 1, 2, 5.5 or 11Mbps depending on distance between devices.

Conventional networking ports are also supported. The Cardea has an integrated, 4 port 10/100Mbps Ethernet switch and a WAN port for cable or ADSL connection. The Cardea supports DHCP server or client and Dynamic DNS. All the latest Microsoft® operating systems are supported and the unit also supports remote management via web browser and can be configured as a virtual server.

Network security has never been more important and wireless networks are particularly vulnerable to attack. The Cardea Wireless AP and Gateway Router is designed to be as secure as possible. The unit features 64/128 bit dynamic WEP encryption to prevent unauthorized parties from reading RF data transmissions and user access management facilities help prevent unauthorized access to the unit. The Cardea uses the unique MAC address of each connected device to identify it as an added security measure.

The Cardea also offers built in firewall capabilities and advanced Network Address Translation (NAT) features to protect the identity of users accessing public networks. The unit also provides an event logging service to record any incidents or changes and remote management is possible via a standard web browser.
